With recent changes in legality and more people turning to alternative medical therapies, CBD-infused products only continue to grow in popularity. Countless companies have created various consumption methods for every need, including capsules, tinctures, edibles and more in a range of potencies. Just as you take your vitamins each morning, hemp products have become a new everyday supplement for many. For those that are creative and wish to include the trendy nutraceutical in their daily meals, here’s how to add CBD to your favorite recipes.
1. Don’t Be Afraid of Healthy Fats
CBD is lipid-soluble, meaning it binds best to foods high in fat. Of course, if you’re consuming hemp products for the purpose of reducing inflammation or enhancing your health routine, this might sound counterintuitive. But in fact, many fats are essential for rounded nutrition. Choose monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which are considered to be “healthy fats,” as they’ve been found to improve heart health and lower bad LDL cholesterol levels.
Infuse CBD into your morning soymilk latte; mix hemp oil into peanut butter for a midday snack; and dose an olive oil dressing, then pour it over a salmon and avocado-topped salad. Not only will you experience the health benefits of CBD, but you’ll also be consuming good fats for your heart; omega-3 fatty acids for your brain; dietary fiber for your gut, and more.
2. Be Careful with Heat
It’s recommended that you store hemp products in a cool, dry and dark place because excessive light and heat can degrade cannabinoids and terpenes, and thereby reduce effectiveness. Similarly, it’s advised that when cooking with CBD oil, never exceed 365 degrees Fahrenheit or better yet, avoid the heat altogether.
Considering adding your supplement after foods have been removed from hot surfaces. For example, rather than mixing hemp oil into your homemade granola and then baking, break CBD-infused chocolate into the mix once cooled. Not only will you avoid ruining your precious tincture, but you’ll also have a better idea towards dosing, which leads us to our next point.
3. A Little Goes A Long Way
While several high quality CBD brands aim to provide a great value to their consumers, many of these hemp products can be costly for some. In addition, while overconsumption of CBD does not lead to any serious health concerns, it may cause undesirable side effects such as fatigue and stomach upset.
When cooking with CBD, be mindful of your dosing; remember that potency accuracy will be affected when exposing the compound to heat. If you’re a new consumer, consider only infusing your hemp oil into recipes that don’t require heat, like smoothies and salad dressings; or only dose the hemp oil into the meal after cooking is complete. Start with a small dose of 15-30mg and record your body’s reaction; in time, you may find you require a greater dose for the effect you’re looking to achieve, or maybe you can even get by with less.
4. Read The Whole Product Label
Note that many CBD products are often infused with other nutraceuticals to create a particular effect — things like caffeine for energy, or melatonin for sleep. In addition, it’s especially common for CBD tinctures to be infused with flavorings like mint, citrus, and more. When cooking, we advise choosing a versatile tincture, one that is odorless, flavorless and simplistic in ingredients so that you can mix it into anything at any time of day.
Of course, you also want to be sure that the company you’re purchasing from lab tests their products to ensure consistency and a safe experience. Because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate hemp products, it’s important to do your own research to avoid illegitimate products that don’t contain the proper amount of CBD; or ones that may contain too much THC, a psychoactive ingredient that causes the “high” that many hemp product users are looking to avoid.
