NORML, one of the cannabis industry’s leading advocacy groups for full legalization and decriminalization, describes in perfect detail just how important the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is in every faction of life:

“The endogenous cannabinoid system, named after the plant that led to its discovery, is perhaps the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis, the maintenance of a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment.”

In short, the ECS is responsible for almost every biological process our body goes through; from regulating mood and feeling pain to how our immune system responds. By understanding how it works, we can figure out how CBD affects the ECS and in how many different ways.

The receptors being referred to here are CB1 and CB2. However, CBD doesn’t bind directly with either of them, yet it can still antagonize them and produce various effects. Scientists also hypothesize CBD may be interacting with other receptors.

CBD dosing guidelines
